Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) announced that its medical and hazardous waste incinerator projects in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have achieved 80 percent and 90 percent completion respectively. Set to start operations by Q1 2020, the projects include two warehouses and cold storage rooms to collect ash residue from incineration.

With a capacity of 7,500 tons per year in Abu Dhabi, the medical and hazardous waste incinerators in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain will use the latest incineration technologies to ensure safe and sustainable waste collection and treatment process. The incinerators can handle various infectious waste, such as needles, syringes and other objects contaminated with blood collected from isolation wards, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and from industrial and commercial establishments.

In addition, they can handle laboratory solvents, as well as some heavy metals used in thermometers, batteries and disinfectants, among others. The facilities will burn these types of waste at temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Celsius to provide a permanent solution to the treatment of most common solid and liquid medical and hazardous waste produced in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

His Excellency Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Tadweer, said: “Tadweer’s latest incinerators in the emirate of Abu Dhabi align with its strategic objective of providing efficient solutions to ensure safe disposal of medical and hazardous waste to keep up with the fast-paced growth of the emirate’s healthcare sector as per the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. The projects also demonstrate Tadweer’s commitment to complying with the highest health, safety and environmental standards to contribute to the overall welfare of the Abu Dhabi community.”

He added: “At Tadweer, we take a keen interest in utilizing the best international expertise and the latest technologies in handling medical and hazardous waste. This significantly improves the quality of services provided to society while promoting sustainable and integrated waste management systems in the emirate.”

Tadweer is the key government entity responsible for all activities related to the development of waste management services in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste in a safe, efficient and economical manner. The Center is also tasked with carrying out pest control, educating communities about the significance of protecting the environment, and encouraging them to adopt sound environmental habits to drive sustainable development.
