Air pollution is one of the key issues in Middle East region. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Air Pollution is estimated to kill about 500,000 people annually in this region (1 out of every 10 deaths). The main sources of air pollution in the Middle East are natural sources, pollutants such as sand, dust mites and sea salt. The other sources are occurred due to human activities such as transport and industries.

Very aware of the risks that may be caused by poor indoor air quality, Dubai Municipality has created a set of recommendations and thresholds in its Green Building Regulations and Specifications developing a range of strategies, policies and studies to address the air quality challenges of the growing city. One of the most important strategies is the Air Quality Strategy which aims to implement a smart, innovative and sustainable approach in achieving the 90% target of clean air days set by the National Agenda UAE Vision 2021.
